NRA Home Firearm Safety Instructor Course
  • Tuition: $150.00
  • This is an 11 hour course.
  • A non-shooting course that teaches Instructor Candidates how to teach the basic knowledge, skills, and to explain the attitude necessary for the safe handling and storage of firearms and ammunition in the home.
  • Teaches safe gun handling through classroom teaching only.  Content includes the NRA’s three rules for safe gun handling; primary causes of firearms accidents; firearm parts; how to unload certain action types; ammunition components; cleaning; care; safe storage of firearms in the home; and the benefits of becoming an active participant in the shooting sports.                                                                                                      
  • The class includes Basic Instructor Training (BIT).  You must either take the BIT portion in this course or must have had BIT within the last 2 years.
  • Possession of basic firearm safety and shooting skills is a prerequisite for certification as an NRA instructor.  In order to take this course, you must pass the pre-qualification test which includes firearms safety.
  • Students demonstrate organizational and teaching skills via participation in practical exercises during the course, and complete an instructor certification examination. 
  • Instructor Candidates will receive the NRA Home Firearm Safety Instructor Manual & CD, NRA Home Firearm Safety handbook, NRA Gun Safety Rules brochure, Basic Firearm Training Program brochure, and course completion certificate.                                                                                                          
  • To qualify as an NRA Instructor, you must possess and demonstrate a solid background in firearm safety and shooting skills acquired through previous firearm training (such as completion of an NRA Basic Firearm Training Course) and/or previous shooting experience. 

PLEASE NOTE:  Certifications are issued by the NRA training department.  Therefore you will pay tuition to USA Training  Academy for the course and additional certification and processing fees payable to the NRA.

Course content:
  • This course includes Basic Instructor Training (BIT).  This course is intended for all adults regardless of previous shooting experience or NRA-affiliation. An NRA Certified Training Counselor will validate comprehension and application of gun safety rules; proper handling; loading and unloading procedures; application of pistol shooting fundamentals; stable shooting positions. 
  • BIT takes approximately 7 hours. If this is your first Instructor credential, or if it has been more than 24 months since you have taken NRA Basic Instructor Training, you are required to take this course again.
  • Satisfactorily complete an NRA Instructor Training Course for Home Firearm Safety, and receive the endorsement of the NRA Training Counselor conducting your training.
  • Submit your application with the appropriate certification fee. Membership in the National Rifle Association is strongly recommended. Certified Ratings are available to individuals who wish to be fully qualified to conduct basic courses (21 years of age or older).
